The election is in less than 60 days. The OCR has recently gone up. Fuel prices remain uncertain.
It would be easy to focus on the challenges facing New Zealand businesses right now.
And there are certainly challenges.
Despite this, however, there is a growing sense of optimism about the New Zealand economy. The Reserve Bank, NZIER and other economists are seeing signs that the recovery has resumed.
Here at OptiFi, based on what we are seeing across the businesses and sectors we work with, we tend to agree.
We are fortunate to work with clients across a range of industries – including wine, manufacturing, health and the charitable sector – and there are encouraging signs emerging.
In the wine industry, we are hearing of increased sample requests and enquiries for larger volumes of New Zealand wine. While the industry continues to face significant challenges, it is encouraging to see renewed interest and potential demand developing in various markets.
In manufacturing, there are signs that businesses are beginning to look beyond simply managing costs and maintaining margins. Conversations are increasingly turning towards opportunities, investment and how businesses can position themselves for growth as demand improves.
In the health sector, workforce shortages remain a significant challenge, particularly in the public system. However, the private health sector continues to show considerable activity and growth, creating opportunities for providers and the businesses that support them.
And in one of our old stomping grounds, the dairy industry, there is renewed optimism. Strong dairy returns and the Fonterra payout earlier in the year have provided many farmers with greater confidence, supporting investment and spending throughout regional New Zealand.
Of course, it is not yet time to completely relax.
There are still plenty of uncertainties. Fuel prices remain volatile, interest rates are rising again, and the upcoming election creates its own level of uncertainty for businesses making decisions about investment and growth.
But perhaps the important thing is that the signs of recovery are starting to show themselves.
For some businesses, the challenge will be navigating the final hurdles that remain. For others, it will be making sure they are ready to take advantage of the opportunities that come with a recovering economy.
Either way, now is a good time to be thinking ahead.
